FAQ

Common Questions

How much insurance does Uber or Lyft carry?

It depends on what the driver was doing. During a trip, including on the way to pick someone up, the rideshare company usually carries a large liability policy, often $1 million. When the app is on but no ride is accepted, lower limits apply. When the app is off, the driver's personal insurance is usually the main coverage. Rules vary by state.

I was a passenger. Who pays?

As a passenger you usually didn't cause the crash, so the claim goes against whoever did, which can be your rideshare driver, another driver, or both. Several policies may apply.

I'm a rideshare driver and got hit. Can you help?

Yes. Drivers can have claims against the at-fault driver and may have coverage through the rideshare company's policy depending on app status at the time of the crash.

Should I report the crash in the app?

Yes, report it, but keep it to the basic facts. Don't give a recorded statement or sign anything from the rideshare company's insurer before talking to a lawyer.
